Missoula County Sheriff's deputies have blocked the upper end of Fred's Lane west of the Wye and are reportedly in a standoff with an armed man Thursday afternoon.
"We're investigating a man who is despondent, believed to have a firearm and holed up in his house," Sheriff's Detective Rick Newlon said from the scene at 1:30 p.m. "They have a perimeter set up. We don't know if he's hurt anyone."
The incident began about noon Thursday.
The house is toward the end of Fred's Lane on the north side of Interstate 90. Newlon said there were about four other homes widely dispersed on the hillside. Deputies were going door-to-door alerting residents to the incident, but Newlon said he didn't know if anyone had been evacuated.
Area schools were also alerted so that parents could make other arrangements to pick up children who lived near the suspect's house.
A Special Response Team of deputies was put on standby and later moved to the scene. An ambulance was also on scene.
The Montana Tracker will have more details as they develop.
