A 32-year-old man who last weekend reported an assault outside the AmVets Club in downtown Missoula has asked police to cease the investigation.

The alleged victim initially said the assault involved between eight and 10 people and that an anti-gay slur was used against him. However, he has since reduced the number of participants to one or two people, and asked officials to stop work on the case.

However, because of the initial report and the seriousness of the allegations, police will continue to investigate to try and determine exactly what happened, according to Missoula Police Sgt. Bob Bouchee.

The alleged incident occurred very early Saturday morning outside the bar at 225 Ryman St. It's unclear how many men actually observed or participated in the attack, and police are looking for witnesses.

The victim did not report the assault until Saturday night, after he had driven himself to the hospital. He complained of pain in various areas of his body, but no lacerations or bruising were documented by an officer who took the report, according to police. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Anyone with additional information, should contact Detective Shelagh More at (406) 552-6285 or Crimestoppers at 721-4444.
