The Missoula Public Art Committee commissioned Nelson for the project, which is the largest mural she has ever painted. It has taken more than four weeks for her to complete it.

Lillian Nelson prepares the finishing touches Monday for the 113-foot-long mural she designed for the new retaining wall alongside the double roundabout intersection on Van Buren Street. The colorful mural envisions the gap between Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo with glimpses of what the Salish and Kootenai tribes would have seen before the arrival of white settlers in the Missoula valley.
