A Missoula woman was killed on U.S. Highway 93 North near Ravalli when a series of unexpected and tragic events unfolded around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
It began with a tire coming off a single-axle trailer that was being pulled by a Ford Explorer.
According to the Montana Highway Patrol dispatch center, the Explorer was headed north when the trailer tire popped off and rolled into the southbound lane.
A Volvo sport utility vehicle hit the tire and swerved into the northbound lane, colliding with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The driver of the motorcycle, Robin Dawn Howell-Hintz, 46, died from injuries suffered in the crash, said Missoula County Sheriff Mike McMeekin. Howell-Hintz worked part-time for the Missoula County Sheriff's Department, McMeekin said.
Howell-Hintz was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which remains under investigation.
