Kelly Lemar and daughter Cameron Jones, 12, from left, pick out a Christmas tree with Jones’ friend Ella Spinder, 13, on Tuesday at the Adams Ranch and Trees lot at the corner of Reserve Street and South Avenue. Lemar went home with a 6-foot noble fir tree.

Missoula Parks and Recreation has started its annual post-holiday Christmas tree recycling program.

Three drop-off locations have been set up around the city by Parks and Rec's Urban Forestry Division for Missoulians to have their Christmas trees be recycled into mulch.

Trees will be accepted at the South Avenue parking lot at Fort Missoula, Playfair Park and McCormick Park.

Christmas trees can also be taken to EKO Compost, 1125 Clark Fork Lane.

All ornaments and other decorations must be removed from trees before they are dropped off. The city also reminds residents not to use the sites to dump yard waste or garbage.

Last year, the program recycled more than 15,000 trees, saving space in the landfill.

The city will be collecting trees at the drop off locations through Tuesday, Jan. 12.
