Lowell Elementary School in Missoula was briefly on lockdown Thursday after a report of a boy on the playground with a rifle. That rifle was later determined to be a BB gun.

Sgt. Travis Welsh said that at around 2:30 p.m., Missoula police were sent to Lowell School for a report of a boy on the playground with a rifle.

A witness said the boy walked into a nearby home. Officers spoke with the boy at the house and discovered the rifle was a BB gun. Lowell was placed on lockdown while officers responded to the scene.

The incident is under investigation and officers are attempting to contact the boy's parents.
