COLUMBIA FALLS – A mother and her 3-year-old son were killed in a house fire here Monday morning, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry has confirmed.

Both were reported missing and unaccounted for as firefighters battled the blaze on Trumble Creek Road.

Their bodies were later recovered and taken to the State Crime Lab in Missoula for autopsies. The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of relatives, Curry said.

The 30-year-old mother and the boy were reportedly asleep in the basement when the fire was reported.

The Associated Press said the homeowner, Juanita Hallas, told Kalispell TV station KCFW that she was at work when her husband called to say the house was on fire and he had to jump out a window to escape the flames.

Hallas said her daughter-in-law and step-grandson were asleep in the basement when the fire started.

The fire was reported at 9:22 a.m., according to Curry, and the home was fully engulfed when multiple fire departments from the Flathead Valley arrived.

Curry said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
