HAMILTON - Lois Marian Hendrickson Huber, 91, of Hamilton, died on June 11, 2008, at the Marcus Daly Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

She was born in Missoula on Aug. 21, 1916, to Bitterroot Valley pioneers Soren and Dona Hendrickson. Lois graduated from Hamilton High School in 1934 and she received her B.A. degree from the University of Montana in 1938. She married the late Hubert Huber in 1938. They lived in Idaho and Washington before settling in Hawthorne, Calif., in 1955.

Lois was an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles inner city and she was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. Lois and Hubert retired to her childhood home in Hamilton in 1973. She had mixed feelings about returning to Montana: "I told Huby that I would try it for a year, and we never left." They enjoyed traveling, gardening, square dancing, playing bridge, old cars, and they were active in the Hamilton Federated Church. Lois was a consummate storyteller and Bitterroot Valley historian. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, and cooking. She baked, arguably, the best apple and cherry pies in the Bitterroot.

Besides her parents and her husband, Lois was preceded in death by her brothers, Duane and Donald Hendrickson. She is survived by her son, Wayne Huber of Corvallis, Ore.; her daughter, Carol (David) Whetstone of Brentwood, Calif.; her granddaughter, Lydia Huber of Minneapolis; her grandsons Craig and Grant Whetstone, both of California; two great-grandchildren; eight nieces and two nephews. Lois is also survived by her cherished friend and caregiver Sue Mosbrucker of Hamilton.

Friends are invited to a gathering to remember Lois at the family home, 111 Lyndale Ave. in Hamilton on Friday, June 27, at 1 p.m.

Lois had expressed her wish that gifts might be made in her memory to the Hamilton Library, the Bitterroot Humane Association, or to the Hamilton Federated Church.

Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel.
