MISSOULA - John J. Froehlich, 74, of Missoula, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005.
He was born Sept. 16, 1931, to John V. and Frances (Steckler) Froehlich and was raised in Missoula, attending St. Francis grade school and graduating from Missoula County High School in 1950.
Following graduation, he served with distinction in the U.S. Navy as an aviation mechanic during the Korean conflict.
On Aug. 28, 1954, he was united in marriage with Jean Steeves. After residing in California for the remaining six months of John's military service, the couple returned to Missoula where they lived for the next 51 years.
In 1956, John began a career in the forestry industry with Anaconda Forest Products in Bonner. He trained as a lumber grader and was promoted to the planer department, becoming a certified lumber grader. In 1963, John achieved the level of check grader and was responsible for training new personnel and maintaining standards for all lumber graders.
In 1974, he joined Intermountain Lumber Co., and he held the position of quality control supervisor from that point until his retirement. One of the high points of his career was receiving a master's certificate from the Western Wood Products Association in 1981.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman, passing his love of the outdoors on to his children. Family vacations were often spent camping in western Montana, usually at the family's property on the East Fork of the Bitterroot.
After retirement, he and Jean traveled extensively, enjoying several cruises, a trip to Australia and a winter in Arizona.
His friends and family will remember him as an honest, ethical and loving man, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, and their five children: Kathi Worley (Steve), Linda Rayfield, Debbie Mills (Eric), David Froehlich (Maureen) and Mark Froehlich; seven grandchildren: Tim, Andy, Ryan, Chelsea, Courtney, Devin and Cory; and his sisters: Kathleen Hauck (Bob), Shirley Seman (Ken) and Marilyn Harmon (Lonnie).
Cremation has taken place. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Pope John XXIII Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Father Ed Hislop.
