CORVALLIS - Ashley M. Friend, 18, of Corvallis, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at her home with her family present, after a recurrence of melanoma.

Ashley Margaret Friend was born Aug. 7, 1987, in Missoula to Wayne and LaVonne Viegut Friend. In June 2002, Ashley was diagnosed with melanoma. She graduated with highest honors from Corvallis High School in June 2005.

Ashley was active in speech, debate, choir, band and drama. She was the 2005 State Serious Oral Interpretation Champion in speech and debate. Ashley received two college scholarships and planned to attend the University of Montana in the fall. God gave us three more years with Ashley. In July her cancer returned.

Ashley is survived by her father, Wayne, and mother, LaVonne Friend, brother Steven Friend and grandparents Frank and Lucia Friend and Allan and Bonnie Viegut.

Ashley accepted Christ as her Savior at age 5, and her faith in God sustained her throughout her illness. Her outgoing personality, generous spirit and beautiful smile brought her many friends. She brought great joy to us all and will be missed by each one of us, but our family is comforted by the knowledge that we will see Ashley again dancing and singing in heaven with Jesus.

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Rom. 8:38-39.

Visitation for friends and family will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hamilton First Baptist Church with Pastor Steven McClung officiating. Private family interment will take place at Corvallis Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to the Marcus Daly Hospice of the Bitterroot Endowment Fund or the Hamilton First Baptist Church.
