HELENA - A precious soul left this earth Wednesday, June 18, 2008. A loving father, grandfather and friend, Ervin Kaul, died peacefully at the Big Sky Care Center in Helena.
Ervin Gerhardt Kirschman was born March 7, 1925, in Ashley, N.D., to Jacob and Katherine Kirschman. He was the youngest child in a family of nine children. His mother died in childbirth and he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and George Kaul.
On June 26, 1946, he married Lavina Frey and from this union, four sons were born.
He and Lavina moved to Townsend in 1957, after one year in Great Falls, and several years of farming in Ashley. He served the Townsend area residents through Kaul's Conoco until his retirement in 1991.
He spent his retirement years at Big Sky, Bridger Bowl, and King's Hill skiing with his buddy, Cactus Sherwood.
Since 2000, until her death on Dec. 16, 2005, he lovingly cared for his wife, Lavina, as she moved in and out of the Broadwater Heath Center in Townsend. In Sept. 2005, Ervin joined Lavina at the Broadwater Health Center and resided there until July 31, 2007, when he moved to the Rosetta Assisted Living facility in Helena. In April 2008, he moved to the Big Sky Care Center and lived there until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by sons Gary (Carol) of Missoula, Tony (Stephanie) of Casper, Wyo., Steve (Bev) of Helena and Rick of Carson, Calif.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his favorite Pomeranian, Peanut.
The family would like to thank the Broadwater Health Center, Rosetta Assisted Living, and the Big Sky Care Center for the loving care he received throughout his stays.
The Townsend Funeral Chapel in Townsend is in charge of arrangements.
An outdoor service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, June, 28, in Townsend at the Heritage Park. A light lunch will follow the service.
The family requests memorials to be sent to the HomeLink of St. Peter's Hospice program or to a memorial of the donor's choice.
