HAMILTON - Verdun R. France, 90, of Hamilton, passed away at Valley View Estates on Monday, June 9, 2008.
He was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Lewistown to the late Fred H. and Stella Tait France, the oldest of 10 children.
He came to the Bitterroot Valley with his family in 1932 and graduated from Stevensville High School. He was among the first group in Ravalli County to be drafted into World War II. He was a mechanic on B-17s in the Army Air Corps and spent most of his service years in England. In 1945, he was honorably discharged.
Verdun held various jobs until going to work for the state highway department, from which he retired.
In 1958, he married Onetta Rose, but they later divorced.
Verdun loved to play musical instruments and to sing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wanda; and brothers, Merritt, Milton, Miles and Lincoln.
Surviving include his sister, Wilma (George) Snell of Hamilton; brothers, Aaron (Barb) of Missoula, Kenneth of Richmond, Calif., and Clinton (Genea) of Mesa, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, June 12, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Cemetery in Stevensville.
