MISSOULA - Niola M. Mitchell, 72, of Missoula, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2008, after another very courageous battle with cancer at St. Patrick Hospital.
Niola was born in Wheatland, Wyo., Feb. 22, 1936, to Steve and Virginia Johnston. She was the oldest of three children.
She moved to Missoula in 1950. On July 19, 1952, she married Bob Mitchell and helped him with his building and painting business until his retirement.
Niola loved to plant flowers and work in her yard, and play bridge with her "girls." On Saturdays, Niola could be seen throughout Missoula going to yard sales with her family and friends. Bob and Niola loved to buy houses in Missoula and on Flathead Lake and work on them turning them into beautiful homes.
Niola was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend.
She will be missed, but we are all so glad she is out of her pain and heaven now has one more angel.
She would have wanted to thank Dr. Nichols and the angels at Montana Cancer Center and all the wonderful staff on 5 North at St. Patrick Hospital.
Bob and Niola have had a niche for their urns at Sunset for quite a while that she called their "condo." Niola told Bob if she doesn't beat cancer she would, "go out and fix up the condo for them."
Niola was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister Barbara Engebretson.
Niola is survived by her husband Bob Mitchell of Missoula; a daughter and her husband Frank and Marta Carlson of Missoula, a son and his wife, Jerry and Donna Mitchell of Hamilton; a brother and his wife, Bobby and Judy Johnston of Missoula; three grandchildren, Tara Smerker and her husband Darren Smerker and Danny and Nichole Mitchell; four great-grandchildren Kelsey, Ashley, Amanda and Jacob; and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place by Daly Leach in Hamilton. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 30 at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Memorials can be given to the American Cancer Society.
