KALISPELL — With sadness, we say goodbye to our beloved mother Betty Ann Kirkwood McElwain, who died Thursday, March 15, in Kalispell. Born Dec. 28, 1928, to Mary Agnes Mulcihy Kirkwood and Maywood Kirkwood at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, she grew up in Missoula and Seeley Lake.
Betty Ann loved her family, canoeing, fishing, swimming (especially water ballet), and gardening. She was active in Camp Fire, taught swim lessons, played competitive pool, was Ombudsperson for seniors, and active in her church.
In 1949 she married a WWII Navy Veteran, James Donald "Brick" McElwain, raising six children in Maryland and Washington State.
Betty Ann died on March 15, 2018, in Kalispell.
She is survived by her six children: Susan McKinney, James McElwain, Annie Scott, Laurence (Larry) McElwain, Michael McElwain, and Mary Ernsperger, her sister Caroline, 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
An open memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, 2 p.m., at the Tamaracks Resort on Seeley Lake.
