MISSOULA — Mom passed away quietly at her home with her family surrounding her on May 30, 2018. She was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Ronan.
Having a unique name meant lots of questions as to its origin. After too many inquiries she started telling people it was the name of an Indian princess.
She spent summers in Perma with her grandmother, Exie Jacobs, and in Seattle during her high school years. After high school she attended Wittenberg College in Ohio, where she met her soulmate, Harry Stetler.
They eloped and were married in Kentucky on Dec. 8, 1945, before honeymooning at Niagara Falls.
After spending summers at Forest Service lookout towers in Montana they fell in love with Missoula and settled there in 1955.
Mom was devoted to her children and, no matter what, was always there with open arms. In her later years she spent the cold Montana winters in the warmth of Arizona, playing highly competitive cards with friends and family.
Exie was preceded in death by her husband Harry; her mother Vida Allen and father Kent Allen. She is survived by her five children, Kent Stetler (Polly) and their son Chris Stetler (Laura); Gay Stetler and her daughters Lacey Wheatley and children Gabriella, Grace and Asher, and Liza Hunter (Andy) and daughter Stella; Bruce Stetler (Joanne) and their son Kyle (Brit) and children Harriet, Fredrick and Margaret; Exie France (Tim) and daughter Exie Erin and children Christian, Exie and Bode; and Debbie Stetler.
The family expresses great appreciation to Amber and Sakai of Partners in Home Care, and our sister Debbie for the loving care she gave mom for the last five years.
There will be no services per her request. She wanted only a family gathering. Condolences can be posted on the Cremation Society of the Rockies Facebook page.
