1950-2010: MARTINEZ, Calif. – Kerry Patrick Moon, 59, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Walnut Creek, Calif., surrounded by his wife and son, Elliott.
Kerry was born to his parents, Gareth C. and Marjory E. Moon, in 1950 in Custer, S.D. The family soon moved to Missoula. Kerry attended Paxson Grade School then Missoula County High School, graduating from Sentinel High in 1968.
He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served in Ketchikan, Alaska. He married Shirley Smith in 1970 and they had one son, Nathan. They returned to Missoula following his honorable discharge. The two were later divorced.
Kerry worked as the caretaker of Garnet Ghost Town for several years and later as a firefighter with the Missoula Rural Fire District.
He relocated to the Bay Area of California in the early 1980s, where he worked as a security officer at Seton Hospital and later at the Sun Valley Mall in Concord, where on Dec. 23, 1985, he assisted when an airplane crashed into the mall, killing three and injuring 84 Christmas shoppers.
He met Maria Arias and the two were married in 1986. Their home is in Martinez, Calif., The couple had two sons, Emmanuel Juan (Martinez) Moon and Elliott Garner Moon.
Following retirement, Kerry spent much of his time at the cabin near Hayfork, Calif., where the mountains reminded him of Montana.
Kerry was preceded in death by his father, Gareth C. Moon; and brother, Michael E. Moon.
He is survived by his wife, Maria (Arias) Moon; sons, Nathan (Nicole) of Lolo, Emmanuel of Fresno, Calif., and Elliott of Pullman, Wash.; mother, Marjory (Elliott) Moon of Polson; brother, G. Colin Moon (Jeanne) of Missoula; sisters, Susi Edgar (Tom) of Stuttgart, Germany, and Serena (Mark Vuko) of San Jose, Calif.; and three granddaughters Sophie, Sicily and Katie.
Per Kerry’s wish, he will be buried at sea.
A family memorial service will be held this summer.
