SEATTLE – Leila Mae (Random) Schmelebeck passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, in Seattle after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 9, 1939, to Mildred and Lester Random in Helena. Leila attended Hellgate High and Franklin Elementary School, where she met her forever love and partner Ervin Schmelebeck. They were married for 55 years, a life journey that spanned many states, children, grandchildren, friends and, always, family.
Leila’s life and love were always devoted to family and friends. Her artful hobbies varied from year and whatever she was interested in at the time, she excelled at. One season would find her garden full of marigolds she nurtured from seed, while the next would find her baking and decorating the most amazing wedding cakes. She was an exceptional cook, and we were thrilled when she shared her recipes in a family cookbook that she wrote and had published.
Our greatest joy with Leila was sitting around the kitchen table talking, sharing stories or events of the day. That time was always filled with happiness, because wherever Leila went, she brought smiles and laughter. Her tales were rich and vivid, and usually brought the house down.
She will be missed by many friends and family and is survived by her husband Ervin Schmelebeck; sons Gary (Terri), Rodney (Nora) and Lonnie (Michelle); daughter Lori; grandchildren Zachary, Dawn, Logan, Brooke and Leigh; sister Peggy Williamson; and many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and others who called her family.
