IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Lester VanOmmen, 71, of Idaho Falls, passed away Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, after a short stay at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Lester was born in Harlowton on Jan. 13, 1946, to Peter and Elza VanOmmen.

Lester graduated from Harlowton in 1965 and joined the Air Force shortly afterward, he remained in the Air Force for 25 years. He had varied duties throughout his career. The most outstanding years were when he worked at the Embassy in Bern, Switzerland and Cairo, Egypt. He retired as a MSGT E-7 from the Air Force in 1991. For the next 20 years he worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Missoula until he retired.

He remained in Missoula with his wife DeLores until June 2017 when they moved to Idaho Falls.

Lester enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and camping. He especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren, and loved reading and watching movies.

Lester is survived by his wife DeLores; brother, Wesley(Kathy) VanOmmen; nephew, Dominic VanOmmen; great niece, Alexis VanOmmen; step daughters, Sue (Marty) Pollreisz of Maple Valley, Washington and Robin Beavers (Doug Dahl) of Great Falls; grandchildren, Ryan, Cassie, Felicia, Tyler, Drue, Douglas and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elza VanOmmen; brothers, Gary and Roger VanOmmen; nephew, Wesley Shane VanOmmen; and stepson, Doyle Beavers.

Cremation services are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. Blackfoot, ID 83221. Lester will be laid to rest in Harlowton with graveside services at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family at:
