MISSOULA - Lillian J. Stensrud died peacefully on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010.
Lillian was born to Jim and Del Kelly, of Missoula, on Oct. 7, 1926. She lived all of her life surrounded by Mount Jumbo and taking part in Missoula's historical moments.
She attended Prescott Grade School and graduated from Missoula's County High School. Her mother started the first drive-in restaurant, HiWay Cafe, on East Broadway across from what is now Albertson's. Lil worked for her mother as a carhop during her high school years. She was also an usher at the Wilma Theatre and later worked at the Missoula Mercantile Marking Department.
In 1943, she met the love of her life, Howard C. Stensrud, and they were married on June 25, 1945. He built her a home and gave her the life of her dreams. They raised their family, traveled to Hawaii and Las Vegas, and enjoyed their lake cabin on Big Arm Bay. Howard and Lil hosted lively parties and family gatherings and loved to dance together at the Elks Club. Lil's life as she knew it ended in 1993, when Howard passed away. She then enjoyed her lunches with girlfriends, playing keno and reminiscing of years gone by.
Lil is survived by her daughter Kathleen (Richard) Hansen and grandsons Nicholas and Jason. She also leaves behind her son Glen Stensrud, daughter-in-law Becky Stensrud, grandson Kelly (Beth) Stensrud, granddaughter Carrie Stensrud (Tim Lewis), and her great-granddaughters Anna and Mia.
The Stensrud family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Riverside Healthcare and St. Patrick Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at Garden City Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow at Old St. Mary Cemetery, Chaplain Dan Dixson officiating.
