HAMILTON – Michael Halstead, 59, passed away due to a cardiac episode the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Michael was born March 23, 1955, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Nancy (Dillon) and John B. Halstead.
He graduated from South Charleston High School, Charleston, attended Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), Oxford, Mississippi, with a degree in business/marketing.
Michael grew up working in the family hardware store. Once out of college, he moved to Houston, and began a 35 year career in the food service equipment contracting industry. He then moved to Northern California in 1987, where he met his wife Kari on a blind date. They were married on May 23, 1992. In 1997, the family moved to Montana and Michael continued to manage projects out of his home office. Over the years, he grew the Western regional office of Gill Group Inc. in Hamilton into a highly successful branch and was very proud of the team he had created there.
Michael was a passionate, dedicated tennis player having participated in USTA Team Tennis and many tournaments throughout his life. He helped teach tennis doubles strategy to the Hamilton High School tennis team for several years, as well as spearheading a fundraising effort for new public tennis courts at Hamilton High School. He coached and officiated youth soccer for many years, along with serving as a board member for Ravalli United Soccer. He also coached youth basketball at Kids First for several seasons. He enjoyed hiking in his beloved Rocky Mountains and alpine skiing with his wife and son. He also loved working outdoors on home improvement projects. He traveled with Kari frequently all over Western Europe and Brazil for the past 11 years.
Michael’s positivity, great sense of humor and kindness were reflected in the way he lived his life. You knew you had a friend when you saw the sparkle in those big blue eyes and that great smile. He was a “cup half-full” kind of guy and a pleasure to be around. He taught us all not to settle for less than we deserved and could always somehow spin a seemingly negative situation into a positive opportunity. He consistently demonstrated his philosophy that whatever decisions were made during any challenge must be good for everyone. His dedication to detail and the belief that when you do a job you might as well do it right the first time served him well. Michael lived his life on his own terms, and now that he has gone on to another adventure he will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.
Michael is survived by his wife, Kari Halstead of Hamilton; son, Daymon Halstead of Portland, Oregon; parents, John B. and Nancy Halstead of Hamilton; and brother, John T. Halstead of Hamilton.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Hamilton Assembly of God, 601 W. Main St., Hamilton. A reception will follow. Pastor Doug Peterson will be officiating.
