MISSOULA - Robert J. (Rob) Flink, 66, of Lolo, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at St. Patrick Hospital of heart failure.

He was born Oct. 20, 1943, in Missoula, to Anna and Jerome Flink. He attended Whittier Grade School and Missoula County High School.

He joined the United States Navy and served his country for four years on the USS Cheweekan, visiting most ports in the Atlantic Ocean, and was present at the "Bay of Pigs."

Honorably discharged in 1964, he returned to Missoula, where he met and married Kay Wickes on July 24, 1965. In 1966, their daughter Kristina was born followed in 1969 by their son, Craig.

He worked first at Intermountain Lumber Co., then in various construction jobs around Missoula, specializing in concrete foundations.

He was an avid hunter, and never met a fishing stream he could not conquer. He loved music and was an accomplished drummer and musician. He belonged to a local band with his brother Tom Flink and friend Dave Holt, called The Country Stones, playing around Missoula for over 10 years.

His adventuresome spirit and work vocation led him to work in such interesting locations as Barrow, Alaska, helping to build underground utilities for the city of Barrow, and then returned to Missoula to work construction. In 1989, he moved his family to Kent, Wash., to help construct a 500-man camp on a barge to help aid in the cleanup of the infamous Exxon Valdez oil spill.

In 1990, they moved to Wilsonville, Ore., where he ran a modular housing factory and later worked construction superintendent for Bakke Construction until his health led him to retire and move back to Missoula.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; mother and father-in-law, Heloise and Tom Wickes; brother Jerry Flink; nephews Thomas Leslie Wickes and Randall Borchers.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years; his daughter and son; son-in-law Layne Freedle; grandchildren Cierra and Kendall Flink, and Madison Freedle; also brother Tom (Georgia) Flink; sisters Joyce (Jerry) Hudson, Joan (Warren) Williams and Kathy Clark; brothers-in-law Tom (Diana) Wickes, David (Teresa) Wickes and Jerry (Sandy) Wickes; and sister-in-law Caryl Wickes-Connick; many cousins, nieces and nephews; lifelong friends Don Larsen and Don Steiger; and trusty companions Buddy and JD.

He was simply an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and brother beyond compare. We will miss his smile, his laugh his creativity and sense of humor.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Garden City Funeral Home at 1705 W. Broadway, Missoula, MT 59808 with his niece Lisa Wickes officiating. Reception to follow.
