MISSOULA – Our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, Toma "Thomas" Tonev passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Spokane, after a short illness.

When Professor Thomas Tonev wasn't adoring his grandchildren and singing to them, you could find him traveling to all parts of the globe, talking mathematics, enjoying hiking and discovering new things about nature, history, art, music etc. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Montana, where he worked until the last moment. He was part of the Math Association of America and the American Math Society. He published more than 80 scientific papers, two monographs and a popular book for his math-loving audience. He loved teaching and his students loved him.

He is survived by his wife Elena; daughter Daniela and her husband Chris;  daughter Vassilena and her husband Stephen; sister Maria; niece Zarina; his three grandchildren, Alexander, Sofia and Michael, and numerous friends and relatives.

A celebration of Toma's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Presidents' Room in Brantly Hall on the University of Montana campus in Missoula.

Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Montana (
