HAMILTON – Law enforcement officials are investigating the death of a 40-year-old male found in a car wreck off U.S. Highway 93, according to the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office.
Undersheriff Steve Holton said the man was found shortly after 5 p.m. Monday and the circumstances around his death are under investigation. The man is from Stevensville, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
On Tuesday, a Highway Patrol report noted the man was found in a 1996 Toyota Avalon. The car was traveling southbound on Highway 93 and went off the road, through a fence and wrecked near mile marker 38.
The vehicle came to rest in an irrigation canal. Law enforcement authorities believe the man was dead on impact.
Authorities are still investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the wreck, and they did not know Tuesday if the man had worn a seat belt. Holton said investigators also were still calculating when the crash had taken place.
