Two snowboarders died in separate incidents in Flathead County on Saturday according to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry.
In a press release, Curry said one rider died from a “cliff jump” near Lakeside and another died in a tree well at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
The first victim, identified as 22-year-old Conner Heidegger of Rollins, was boarding with a friend when he intentionally attempted a cliff jump off Blacktail Road near Lakeside some distance from Blacktail Mountain ski resort. He was pronounced dead on the scene from blunt force trauma, Curry said.
In the second, unrelated incident, 28-year-old Scott Robert Hornstra of Alberta, Canada was found dead at 2 a.m. Sunday in a tree well at Whitefish Mountain Resort. He had been boarding with friends on Saturday in the “Sling Shot” area of Hellroaring Basin, inside resort boundaries, when he became separated from the group. A search was initiated, and the victim was found upside down in the deep, powdery snow under a tree. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Curry.
