HAMILTON - A woman found dead in a Florence parking lot Wednesday was identified Thursday as Audrey Marlenee, the former daughter-in-law of former U.S. Rep. Ron Marlenee.
Audrey Marlenee was found Wednesday afternoon in her Ford Taurus, which apparently had been parked in the lot of the Florence Town Pump for several days.
Ravalli County Undersheriff Kevin McConnell said Marlenee was found by a business owner who'd noticed that the Taurus had been there for a while.
In the car, deputies found Marlenee slumped over in the driver's seat, a pistol in her hand. McConnell said the head wound was consistent with a self-inflicted shot.
"It does appear to be a contact wound," McConnell said.
No suicide note was found, but McConnell said Marlenee's car had been impounded and would be searched. It wasn't clear Thursday who the gun belonged to.
Marlenee, who had a history of suicide attempts, according to McConnell, had most recently lived in Missoula and had been involved in a long-running dispute with her ex-husband, Dick, over custody of the couple's children. McConnell said it wasn't known why Marlenee was in the Florence area.
Although the death "scene was consistent with suicide," McConnell said Marlenee's body was taken to the state Crime Lab in Missoula for an autopsy.
"We don't have anything suspicious, but we do want to make sure all the bases get covered," he said.
