My husband and I were adversely affected while traveling through Nashville, Tenn., on May 2. In a time when I worry about the state of our country, my eyes were opened in a positive and hopeful way.
In America, we care about one another. When someone is in the grip of a disastrous situation, the human spirit of giving and helping, no matter what, shines. We had all different races, ethnic backgrounds, all ages and female and male put out a hand to assist us.
We were trapped in a vehicle with water pouring in, gripped in fear, when people put out a hand to help. The emotion of the situation brought me to the conclusion my father and grandfather gave me throughout my life: America is good, Americans are good, and in America we help each other in the worst of times.
When the liberal press wants me to believe otherwise, I will be quick to remember the truth. We want to help and be free to help and choose whom to help. We will choose to help. That is the superiority of the human and American spirit.
