Hellegaard, as a private citizen, worked on legislation that was passed by the legislature and signed into law by governors of both parties. The legislation improved transportation assistance for the elderly and disabled
She has served on the Missoula City Council. While on the council she was consistently a champion for the taxpayers by contesting over-spending and waste in local government. She fought to protect neighborhoods from infill development. She demanded accountability and transparency from elected officials.
As executive director of the Missoula Ravalli Transportation Management Association, she has been instrumental in improving transportation connections between Missoula and four surrounding rural counties in western Montana. The improvements have been focused on providing transportation for the elderly, low income and veterans. She has collaborated with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai, Blackfeet, Northern Cheyenne, Fort Peck and Rocky Boy tribal reservations to improve their transportation programs. She is considered an expert in transportation issues and serves on several local, state and federal transportation boards and commissions. The I Ride program continues to provide low-cost transportation for our workforce along Interstate 90 and the Highway 93 corridor.
