Regarding the Missoulian’s Sunday editorial on Initiative 177 (Sept. 25), most of the text reads like drivel purloined from a pro-trapping lobbyist. What an example of pathetic, wishy-washy, “kick-the-can-down-the-road” writing! Instead of pandering to advocates of obstructionist-style, backward-thinking politics, please advocate for straight-forward, positive action that truly benefits the majority of Montana’s people.
Montanans should vote for I-177 so that public lands, where state citizens and visitors recreate, become virtually trap-free. Trappers can continue to ply their sadistic trade on private lands with landowner permission. However, trapper misbehavior will result in landowner revocation of trapping privileges, a simple cause-and-effect process that protects the public on public lands and weeds out errant trappers.
Voting to prohibit trapping on public lands is the forward-thinking, right thing to do.
