I am writing in support of Medicaid expansion in Montana. The Montana Legislature has a chance to make a world of difference in the lives of thousands of Montanans, including myself.
I worked as a sitter and a nanny up until 2006, when I was diagnosed with diabetes on top of a lifelong heart condition. I began taking all of the preventative steps to manage the disease on my own, but after a while the symptoms became too serious coupled with the complications of my heart condition. The local community clinic has helped me enormously, but having the freedom to have my own health insurance would give me the relief that the clinic cannot.
I was told that I could get health coverage through disability insurance, but I do not think of myself as disabled. I do have serious health conditions, but with the care I need, I could potentially get back to working and living a normal life. It would make more sense for me to get insurance through Medicaid rather than taking resources I do not need through disability insurance.
I urge our Montana legislators to listen to their state and pass Senate Bill 405, the Montana HELP Act, and give the thousands of people in this state the chance to have health insurance. It is the right thing to do.
