Hopefully you had a chance to read Tim Love's letter in the Missoulian (May 14) on Deputy Robert E. "Bob" Parcell's qualifications, or received a flyer in the Missoulian on May 16. Parcell has spent years protecting the people of Missoula County. He is also admired for his humanity and caring of abused animals.
To see Parcell as inflexible is to lack understanding of the incidents our law enforcement officers encounter. You will see not only Parcell but other officers become inflexible when dealing with a drunk driver, abuse of a spouse, someone out of control, etc. Being inflexible in such matters by the officers could save someone's life.
Had Parcell, as a leader of men in Anbar Province, Iraq, not been inflexible at times, how many soldiers could have been lost? It takes a leader to stand his ground, dealing with the people in Anbar, as well as working with people in Missoula County have all seen Parcell's flexibility. Flexibility or inflexibility is the offender's call, and officers will respond.
Parcell has had many honors bestowed on him for his service to our country and the people of Missoula County. Parcell also earned, because of his compassion, commitment, integrity, the rank of colonel in the Marine Corps.
As to being critical of our now-sheriff's department, was it criticizing or was it his constructive evaluating? Parcell is very up-front as situations allow. Better to say it up front than to pussyfoot around.
I find Parcell to be honest. He acts with integrity and knows and enforces the law. Parcell will make a fine sheriff. So it's a vote for Parcell if you want "the right stuff' for sheriff.
