Dear friends of Missoula:
Do you know where our garbage goes and what it does?
As a third grader at Missoula International School. I am concerned for our planet earth and want to protect it. Let me tell you something I learned about how pollution affects our environment.
First, we have to protect our water because our earth is running out of clean water due to all of our garbage we throw in the ocean. You might not know it but the garbage that you dump in the landfill sometimes ends up in the ocean, rivers, lakes and streams.
Next, the plastic that we throw away, when its toxins come out, gets into our ground water supply. It affects our animals because they think that the water is cleaned, drink it and then die due to the toxics in the plastic. Plastic also produces a gas called methane that gravely pollutes our air. It causes sickness like asthma and lung cancer.
Today, I am asking you to reduce and reuse the amount of plastic bags in your daily life. Bring your own tote bags to the supermarket. If you do have to use plastic bags, try to use them again and again. So it does not get used once and then thrown in the trash.
Our planet earth is giving us a place to live. We have to protect our home, so we can keep living in a wonderful home that Mother Earth has given to us.
