This is a followup to my letter of Sept. 25 concerning the city improperly taking property for the reconstruction of South Avenue.
At that time, the amount they paid was $80,000; now they have to pay an additional $344,469, as I mentioned in my letter, but they say they are not raising our taxes but taking it out of the cash reserves. Where does the money come from for the cash reserves? Taxes – that is where it comes from. It should come from the engineers or the people paid to be responsible to follow all laws and not think they can circumvent previous surveys and property line recordings.
Bruce Bender states that they took a very conservative approach to properly working out the reconstruction of Third Street with the adjoining property owners. That is their job; they work for the taxpaying citizens of Missoula, not some higher power that gives them the authority to do whatever they want.
The amount of money wasted by government is so great that our taxes could be much lower if we had responsible people in the higher echelon.
