The guest column by Dave Andrews (July 5) really hit home for me. I am impressed with any politician, regardless of their political leanings, who can put aside the name calling and trash-talking so often seen in political campaigns. His analogy of high school debaters having to argue on both sides of a topic was a good one.
I graduated from Hellgate High School two years ago and was the captain of the debate team for my junior and senior years. Learning to see all the angles of an issue and to articulate all views has been an invaluable skill I learned while debating. I wish more people in American politics held these fair-play and respectful views. Every opinion has merit.
If all we do is shoot down each other’s ideas, how do we expect do get anything done?
