I would like to suggest an extremely important decision to President Royce Engstrom concerning the Grizzly football program. As you are aware the “interim” label has been given to Mick Delaney and his staff. Yes, his staff also is labeled this as well since they have no assurance of having jobs beyond the end of this year.

You have publicly stated you want to maintain a high quality football program moving into the future. I commend you for two decisions you made earlier remaining in the Big Sky and bringing in Delaney as head coach.

I, too, want a high quality program for ALL teams that reflects the values of alumni and the people of Montana. One of the things that makes Grizzly athletics special is the sense of ownership by people that this is their team. One needs to look no where else but to Robin Selvig and the Lady Griz basketball team. Have you ever notice that Selvig always speaks in terms of “our” team, never using “my” team. The same can be said for Wayne Tinkle and many other coaches at the university

The time has come to remove the “interim” label from Mick and his staff. If you do not, you risk losing personnel and this year’s recruiting class. Few people may want to remain or become part of the football program that has no certainty to it. You need to provide stability now, not later. Some have suggested that you are waiting for a new athletic director so they can name “their” own coach.

Other situations have existed in the past where a new athletic director comes into a university and inherits coaches. Again just look to the past with Wayne Hogan. If he cleaned house we would have lost Selvig, Don Read and others.

Do the right and responsible thing and maintain “our” program by providing much-needed stability to the program by giving Delaney and his staff at least a two-year contract. I also invite anyone else to contact you to encourage you to do the right thing for the university.
