No one in Montana has much to gain by denying health coverage to our uninsured poor. We all have much to lose, the uninsured most of all, but legislators too.
Only the wealthy will pay slightly increased taxes for the expansion of Medicaid. Our Republican legislators side with the 1 percent because dark money from outside the state finances their campaigns. They have been "persuaded" to adopt the position that cost Mitt Romney the presidency – that 47 percent of Americans are "takers." They think we must all hate the poor because poor people are a burden that retards our prosperity.
What are we to make of the fact that the vast majority of that 47 percent are the elderly retired, the working poor, and children?
The 70,000 Montanans who could have health insurance if their own representatives did not deny them coverage include a voting bloc that can determine the outcome of 2016 races. Voters did not forget Romney's heartless lie in 2012 and they won't forget this one either.
