The man Missoula knew as “Sarge” died of natural causes in a local hospital.
Rupert Holland, 72, was a South Carolinian and Army veteran who became a face of University of Montana athletics as equipment manager from 1951 until his retirement in 1975. He received the Ed Chinske Award in 1976 as Missoula’s outstanding sports professional.
Holland adopted Robin Selvig’s Lady Griz basketball team, presenting players with flowers and candy, carpeting their locker room and taking them to lunch.
Even in retirement, Holland’s “life cycled around the department of athletics,” said UM athletic director Harley Lewis.
