A 43-year-old Arlee man was killed Wednesday evening when his van rear-ended a loaded logging truck on U.S. Highway 93 north of Missoula.
No one else was injured in the wreck, which occurred between mile markers 5 and 6 shortly before 5:30 p.m. and slowed traffic for about two hours.
The victim was apparently distracted on his cell phone when he crashed into the truck, which was driving about 20 mph and using its four-way flashers, said Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Richard Hader.
"We've been tracking that in our crashes and drivers on cell phone, in general, don't pay as close attention," he said.
The victim was not wearing a seat belt. Alcohol, speed and road conditions were not factors in the wreck, Hader said.
The logging truck was out of Seeley Lake.
