GREAT FALLS - Wildlife officials are investigating after two elk were illegally killed at a viewing area on the C.M. Russell Wildlife Refuge northeast of Lewistown.

Bill Berg, deputy project leader for the refuge, says rifles were used to shoot a cow elk and a bull elk near Slippery Ann Campground just east of U.S. Highway 191 sometime between Oct. 10 and Oct. 12. The Great Falls Tribune reports hunting is not allowed in the area.

Berg says the cow elk was left to rot, and the head, back straps and hind quarters of the bull elk were removed.

Anyone with information about the poaching is asked to call the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks hotline at 406-TIP-MONT.
