A Billings judge Monday sentenced a 35-year-old man to five years with the Montana Department of Corrections for assaulting another man with a beer mug.
Charging documents say that on Feb. 8, Tanner John Heick struck the victim above the right eye, causing a 1- to 2-inch gash. Police responded to the incident at Pepper’s Bar and Grill, 75 27th St. W., and arrested Heick.
Officers spoke with a bartender who said he saw Heick and the victim sitting at a table.
The bartender told police that the victim handed Heick a cellphone and then took it back, after which Heick took a glass beer mug and hit the victim in the right side of the head.
The man hit with the beer mug gave a similar account of what happened, according to court records.
On Monday, District Judge Gregory R. Todd sentenced Heick on one count of felony assault with a weapon and recommended him for a Department of Correction’s addiction treatment program.
