BUTTE - A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fire that heavily damaged a historic, three-story apartment building in Butte.

Jeffrey R. Mizerski of Butte appeared in Justice Court on Tuesday on a felony arson charge stemming from the Aug. 23 fire at the old National Hotel building, where he lived at the time. His bail has been set at $200,000.

Firefighters and rescue workers arrived to find the building fully engulfed at about 4 a.m. with people trapped inside. Four people were taken to the hospital, but no serious injuries were reported.

Sheriff John Walsh told The Montana Standard the state crime lab in Missoula recently released evidence allegedly linking Mizerski to the fire. Mizerski was arrested Monday.

Police didn't release details on how the fire was started or a possible motive.
