BILLINGS - A 46-year-old Colstrip man accused of illegally killing a bald eagle has pleaded not guilty to federal charges.

Dale Leroy Satran appeared in court Thursday and denied two misdemeanor charges of unlawfully killing and possessing a bald eagle on March 1, 2006.

The birds are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

If convicted, Satran faces up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
