A Missoula man and woman are in jail after allegedly stealing sodas and candy from a group of teenage boys under the guise of police officers, then threatening to "cap them."
Maksim Chinikaylo, 25, and Anna Chinikaylo, 19, were charged Wednesday with robbery and impersonating police officers, both felonies. They appeared in Missoula County Justice Court over a live video feed from jail, and remain in custody on $50,000 bail.
According to court papers, the couple pulled up beside the group of teenagers early Wednesday morning in a silver BMW on Catlin Street. They identified themselves as police, then asked the boys their ages and whether or not they had been drinking.
The teens, who had just visited a Holiday gas station on Russell Street to buy snacks, said the man threatened to "beat their asses" if they did not hand over a paper bag they were holding.
The teens passed the bag to the man, expecting him to return it after discovering it didn't contain alcohol, but snacks and sodas, including two bottles of Pepsi and a candy bar. Instead, the man asked the woman if he should "cap them," then drove away.
The car then turned around, approached the boys again and told them to stop at the Westside Lanes parking lot. The boys ran inside the bowling alley and called 9-1-1.
Police located the silver BMW nearby on Russell Street, and identified the occupants as Maksim and Anna Chinikaylo. Two bottles of Pepsi, a brown paper bag, and an empty candy bar wrapper were on the floor of the car, records state.
