Try 3 months for $3

A Minnesota couple was sentenced Thursday in Billings to one day in custody and five years of supervised release, after being arrested with almost 1,000 pounds of marijuana, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters sentenced both Steven and Vicki Robinson, of Milaca, Minnesota, to the supervised released Thursday, despite a guideline range of 37 to 46 months in prison for Steven, and 30 to 37 months in prison for Vicki.

The couple cooperated with law enforcement, and Watters cited Steven Robinson’s health problems in her sentencing. The couple pleaded guilty in November to possession with intent to distribute marijuana. They were arrested in August 2017 in Miles City.

According to the press release:

Montana Highway Patrol’s Interdiction Task Force got a tip from a Minnesota drug task force that a recreational vehicle was transporting a large amount of pot from California to Minnesota on Aug. 30, 2017.

MHP started watching a RV driven by Steven Robinson, 59, and his wife Vicki Robinson, 60, in a Walmart parking lot in Miles City. MHP then followed the RV to the Gold Dust Casino parking lot. Officers approached and asked the couple for license and registration.

When Vicki Robinson opened the door to the RV to get the documents the officers could smell the marijuana, according to the press release.

Steven Robinson admitted there was 800 pounds of marijuana in the RV after a K-9 alerted the RV, and Robinson agreed to let MHP search the RV and his cellphone. MHP found 960 pounds of marijuana.

Robinson told MHP he had delivered drugs before and was paid $20,000.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Godfrey. The sentencing was reached Thursday, and it's unclear where they'll serve their supervised release.
