The government of Washington Territory in Olympia created a sprawling county in the territory's easternmost region and called it “Missoula.” It consisted of the land west of the Continental Divide in what in 1864 became Montana Territory. The county seat was located at the trading post of Hellgate on the new Mullan Road west of modern-day Missoula.
