A train rolled into Butte for the first time, on a bitter evening too cold for much celebration. It belonged to the Utah and Northern Railroad and connected Montana with Salt Lake City. With the boost, Butte soon became the "richest hill on Earth," with a population that more than tripled to 14,000 by 1884 and eventually approached 100,000.
