In the midst of World War II, two woodcutters near Kalispell found a Japanese balloon bomb, minus the bomb. It had come from the Washington coast and finally touched down in the Flathead Valley some 475 air miles inland. It was the first of some 200 bomb-carrying paper balloons found in the western U.S. and Canada.
