Less than three months after his capture in northern Montana, Chief Joseph spoke of the meaning of Christmas to his Nez Perce people at a prisoner-of-war camp at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. All 450 Indians sat in a long tent and ate a Christmas feast spread on the ground before them. They’d arrived by railroad cars in late November.
