SEELEY LAKE - The Jocko Lakes fire has grown to 18,000 acres, incident commander Glen McNitt said Sunday night.

One home and two outbuildings have been destroyed near Hidden Lake, northwest of Placid Lake, he said.

Another home and one commercial property have been damaged by the flames.

The fire is within a mile of the town of Seeley Lake, and homeowners have been evacuated from subdivisions just outside of town - where the lake affords no protection from the flames.

Placid Lake has also been evacuated and homes in that area remain at risk.

Firefighters made some progress Sunday, after the fire made a huge run, 8-mile run a day earlier. Monday could be another good day, McNitt said.

But everyone is bracing for the 20-30 mph winds predicted for Tuesday.

An inversion held smoke close to the ground in the Seeley Lake for much of Sunday, and sent it pouring into the Missoula, where the airport was closed for two hours in the afternoon because of the pall.

The Missoulian has two reporters and two photographers in Seeley Lake, providing updates for Missoulian.com and for Monday's print edition of the newspaper.
