GREAT FALLS - The state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks has closed a seven-mile stretch of Belt Creek to floaters due to a log jam.
Regional parks manager Matt Marcinek says the logjam was caused by a spring storm two weeks ago that knocked down dozens of trees in the Little Belt Mountains.
A log is lodged completely across the creek. Park staff will monitor the logjam and will reopen Belt Creek to recreational use if it clears naturally. If not, park staff will wait until the spring runoff subsides to determine if the logjam can be safely removed.
FWP game warden Kelly Friede says Belt Creek is running higher now than he has seen in the past six or seven years.
Sluice Box State Park is located between Monarch and Belt on U.S. Highway 89.
