GREAT FALLS - A Great Falls man who beat his girlfriend nearly to death has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
On Tuesday, victim Jo Vavaro wept in a Cascade County courtroom as 26-year-old Edward Bailey was sentenced. District Judge Kenneth Neill gave Bailey 30 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, for aggravated assault and criminal endangerment.
Neill accepted a plea agreement recommending those terms.
Bailey pleaded guilty last month to beating Vavaro with a table leg. The two got in a fight after Bailey returned from a night of drinking.
In court Tuesday, prosecuting attorney Joel Thompson read a letter written by Vavaro in which she asked the judge to put Bailey away for a long time.
